Internal Elastin Lamina

Disruption of the internal elastic lamina is not a specific feature of GCA and can be found in TAB showing features of age-related changes and/or atherosclerosis. Nonetheless, disruption of the internal elastic lamina can be a helpful clue when examining TABs for the diagnosis of GCA.

The presence of disruption of the internal elastic lamina should prompt you to consider further levels +/- immunohistochemistry for Elastic Van Gieson if initial histological examination of the TAB is inconclusive.

Appreciate how you can follow the internal elastin layer up until a certain point where it then disappears.
